The War on Meth in Mexico: Part 2 Merida Progress

October 8, 2008

The collaborative efforts of the U.S. and Mexico to fight the supply of meth and other drugs from Mexico are working, according to this 28 year veteran of the DEA. Efforts being taken in Mexico, she says, have created a shortage of methamphetamine, which has resulted not only in a price increase for meth in the U.S.,  but a purity decrease, as well. In her opinion, Mexico and the U.S. can absolutely put the drug cartels out of business in Mexico, if the U.S. is willing to help them get access to the tools they need to fight the war as effectively as possible.

The War on Meth in Mexico: Part I Merida

October 7, 2008

Mexican drug cartels are fighting back hard against efforts being made by President Calderon to stop the manufacturing and distribution of methamphetamine, cocaine, and other drugs - drugs that too often make their way over the border in to the U.S. Using a strategy described by a DEA spokesman as “bribe you, scare you, kill you”, drug cartels have tried to send their message loud and clear - back off or else. In this audio clip, the first of others I will publish in this series about the drug war, a DEA agent talks about how brutal the war in Mexico has been and why he feels the U.S. should do something to help them to fight the rich and powerful drug cartels that they’re up against.

Congress says Mexican trucks should not be allowed to drive freely in the U.S.

September 11, 2008

President Bush says that allowing truckers from Mexico in to the U.S. is good for our relationship with Mexico. But, is the cost of developing that relationship too high when those truckers take away American jobs and present a safety danger to the American public? Is the cost of developing that relationship too high when Mexico is the largest supplier of meth to the U.S.? Congress thinks so. On Tuesday, September 9th, they approved bill 395-18 to reverse a decision by the Transportation Department to continue the program that began last year which was part of the NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement).  The Mexican truck trafficking issue will now be brought up in the Senate, which needs a two-thirds vote to keep the program from continuing.
