Vermont police, firefighters, and EMTs concerned about rise in meth labs. Residents should be concerned too.
Recent discoveries of meth labs in Vermont have the state police, firefighters, and EMTs concerned about the growth of the illegal labs in the state. Although police have only found five meth labs in the state this year, they report that meth labs are rising. Earlier this month police found the makings of a meth lab in an apartment house on 11 French St in Barre VT. In February two men were arrested in St. Albans for making and selling meth out of their car to undercover Narcotics officers.
Vermont is one of the remaining states that does not require meth lab disclosure of cleanup. After police removed all of the hazardous materials they found in the rental house in Barre, they allowed residents to return to their individual apartments. It seems no one was paying much attention to the woman who lived below the meth cooks. She reported that she’s been having a lot of headaches lately and feeling sick to her stomach.
According to Lt. Jim Cruise, head of the Vermont State Police’s Clandestine Drug Lab Enforcement Team, the manufacture of meth in Vermont is rising in both “…traditional labs and the one-pot cook method. That’s consistent with the trend we’re seeing across New England as well.” (qtd. in Hirschfield).
Joe Beaudry, Chief of the St. Albans Fire Department in Vermont is also concerned. Beaudry says “It just escalates our job more now because it’s bad enough when we go into fires and all this stuff that you know to have now this added that we have to deal with in a fire situation”. (qtd in Slota)
