Louisiana: Governor Jindal signs bill that restricts sale of pseudoephedrine

BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA (July 2, 2009) – A new meth bill has been signed in to law by Governor Bobby Jindal, a bill that will make it tougher for meth cooks to obtain pseudoephedrine, a necessary meth ingredient.

Today, Governor Bobby Jindal signed a bill into law that will help stop drug dealers from illegally making the highly dangerous drug meth. Governor Jindal said, “This new law will help to crack down on the sale of drugs that can be used for the production of methamphetamines – and it is an absolutely vital tool in the fight to keep drugs off of the streets and away from our children.”
The new law – House Bill 890 by Representative Fred Mills – requires that pseudoephedrine drugs are only sold by licensed pharmacies and that when pharmacies sell them, they must enter sale information into a new Central Computer Monitoring System. Sheriffs and State Police officials will be able to access this database and monitor these sales.
Representative Fred Mills said, “This new law follows a trend of other states tightening their laws to stop the illegal production of meth – and it was badly needed in Louisiana. We had excellent partners in this effort – including the Governor’s office, The Louisiana Municipal Association, The Police Jury Association pharmacists, district attorneys, sheriffs and the State Police – and this new law will really make it tough for the proliferation of meth labs in Louisiana.”
