Smurfing definition – buying ingredients to make meth by purchasing ingredients used to make meth in small quantities from several locations. The increase in smurfing by meth cooks have grown from the passage of laws restricting the sale of products containing pseudoephedrine and the increased awareness of the public about meth labs.
Meth cooks smurf by purchasing chemicals from several different stores in order to minimize the suspicions of sales agents, retail sellers, and the police.Meth cooks also have others smurf for them in exchange for cash or meth. Smurfers often shop outside of their area, sometimes in neighboring states.
An October 2007 investigation in Fresno County, California revealed that two individuals had been conducting daily precursor chemical smurfing operations by recruiting homeless people. In return for about $30, the homeless individuals agree to get in to their car and go from store to store buying pseudoephedrine products, like Sudafed. Evidence collected from those cars, included packages of pseudoephedrine, pharmacy listings torn out of a phone books, and several cell phones.
During another pseudoephedrine smurfing investigation in Fresno during April 2008, officers recovered a pseudoephedrine products price list, store receipts, pseudoephedrine product packaging, and paper shredders. Officers also discovered bulk quantities of blister packs that had been removed from their paper packaging and placed into plastic shopping bags in 24-gram increments for resale to pseudoephedrine brokers.
