UC Merced Student Jason West gets charges dropped in plea deal

jason-westSeptember 26, 2008 – Jason West, 36, a former UMerced doctoral candidate, who was arrested on meth related charges, has agreed to a plea deal that will eliminate charges of grand theft and conspiracy to distribute meth. When the Merced Multi-Agency Narcotics Task Force, the Narcotics Enforcement Team, and the Fresno Methamphetamine Task Force arrested West at his home on the 100 block of Castle Drive in Atwater, they found chemicals and tools used to manufacture meth. $10,000 worth of chemicals and equipment that he stole from the University. Other evidence found at his home led police to a second man, Joseph Souza, 49, from Turlock, CA. Souza was also arrested.

During the course of the investigation, police discovered several thousand dollars worth of lab equipment and chemicals that are used to manufacture meth, at a residence located on Elliot Avenue and Gurr Road. Fifty year old, Francis Edward Womack, is suspected of storing the chemicals and equipment that West stole from the University.  He is still at large.

According to the terms of Jason West’ plea agreement, he will be given a sentence of 5 years and 8 months in either the state prison or in a drug rehabilitation program where he will remain in custody. West will also be eligible for parole. His sentencing data is scheduled to occur on November 7, 2008.
