Student seeking doctorate degree in chemistry arrested on meth lab charges
August 11, 2008
When police arrived at the Castle Drive, Atwater home of 36 year old Jason West, they found ingredients and equipment that would have enabled him to produce enough methamphetamine to pay for his UC Merced college tuition with millions of dollars to spare.
A month prior to his arrest, campus police received a tip that someone was stealing chemicals from a university lab in Atwater. Their investigation led them on a trail that ended at Jason West’s home. Before his arrest, West was one of only four students at the University pursuing a doctorate degree. He’d been a student at the UC Merced for 3 years and was close to achieving his goal of receiving a doctorate degree in chemistry.
The August 7th arrest of Jason West on meth lab manufacturing charges is just another example that meth lab cooks come from all walks of life. His story is just another sad ending to what would have been a story of achievement and triumph. Instead, meth made his life story in to the “agony of defeat”.
