New York’s Senator Schumer wants Canada to keep meth out of his state

July 24, 2008

Canada, like many U.S. regions, has been invaded by meth, a highly addictive and illegal drug that has never been much of a problem in the northeastern region of the U.S. New York Senator Charles Schumer knows that could easily change though, if the DEA and the Canadian government can’t stop meth from crossing the border in to New York’s communities. Schumer has asked the DEA to put more agents on the Canadian border. He has also asked Canada to get an action plan in place that will address the meth lab problem.

Like the U.S., it appears that Canada is trying to stop the wave of meth that is washing over them. In April, a a “superlab” was found by Canadian drug enforcement agents. The National Post reported the event, which shows me that Canada is trying to address the meth lab problem there.

Here’s an excerpt of the National Post story called “Police uncover huge meth lab in Mississauga“.

“Police found more than 80 drums of chemicals used to make the drug, deep freeze units to store the raw product, two labs set up to “cook” the chemicals into the final product and huge quantities of methyl amphetamine and ecstasy. The drug, a potentially toxic and explosive brew of chemicals in its raw form, was still bubbling in large vats when police burst in. The first officers inside quickly vacated the building and called for hazardous materials teams to help clear the lab safely. A “hot zone” around the drug lab was evacuated and neighboring buildings were cleared of their occupants.

“We’re not talking about a chemistry lab in somebody’s basement “This was a methamphetamine factory.” - Don Campbell, head of the Toronto drug squad.
